There’s a bit of a do on this weekend – we’ll be open as usual for celebrators and cynics alike, but wishing them all the best. They seem like a thoroughly nice couple.
The big event comes a week before English Wine Week. We have a lot of food and drink weeks these days; some of them, unlike the food they promote, without any sort of provenance at all. But English Wine Week, organised by the official trade body Wines of Great Britain Ltd, isn’t one of those.
They’re fortunate to be riding the crest of the wave as English wines, particularly sparkling, are taken more and more seriously. We’ve tried to embrace a wider selection of English wines but in South Devon Sharpham punches way above its weight, so a wider offer has never really resonated. Mind you there’s nothing wrong with that – we had the Estate Selection at our wedding, though that was a few years ago.
So for us English Wine Week is Sharpham Wine Week and winemaker Duncan Schwab has come up with a couple of generous offers. I expect you’ve all heard about the international recognition our fizz is getting (in fact the Americans are buying it up by the boat load) so we’re offering 15% off the Sharpham award winning sparklers (brut, pink and elderflower) from May 15th, so you can toast young Harry and wha’shecalled, until June 3rd. In addition, buy any three bottles during the actual wine week (28th May- 3rd June) and get a free vineyard tour and tasting with the Sharpham team (redeemable before the end of July).
If you haven’t been there, it’s a great day out in a wonderful setting and the café does some great food. They should because both chefs wintered at Ben’s Wine & Tapas. Though we can’t claim to have taught them everything they know – in fact it’s more the opposite.
In addition you can try before you buy at our Yealmpton café where we’ll be offering Sharpham wine by the glass throughout English Wine Week.
