Description
Italy is famous for its reds (Amarone, Barolo, Chianti Classico etc) but try putting some of their crisp, dry, aromatic whites through their paces. From the gentle hills of Soave, Pavia and Gavi in the north, to hot Puglia in the south they never fail to please – and unlike many hot climate whites, they rarely become too flabby, by which I mean overly fruity sweet. Alpha Zeta Soave; The fair maiden of Verona - perfect on the balcony. 100% Garganega grapes, sourced from hillside vineyards in the Soave area, where the climate is moderate and the volcanic soil is poor and granitic so the vines are put under stress helping to produce superior quality fruit. Great value example of often devalued Soave. Clean and lively, with fresh apple, pear, citrus and almond flavours. Castel del Lupo Pinot Grigio ‘Della Ginestra’; Top notch Pinot Grigio from the chalky Ginestra vineyard in the gently hilly Oltrepo Pavese DOC, Pavia, rather than the usual Veneto - better by miles than the usual generic plonk. Pure, gently aromatic style, crisp and lightly nutty, with fine citrus and peach fruit characters and savoury, textural finish from 4 months on fine lees. Pievalta Verdicchio Superiore; Verdicchio is indigenous to the Adriatic coast of Central Italy and makes the perfect partner for Mediterranean seafood. Pievalta has been commended by wine writers Jancis Robinson, Jane MacQuitty and David Williams as being one of the finest., ‘Stony white fruit with a hint of mandarin. Linear lemon palate and then ends on a fine leesy note.‘  (16.5/20 – Jancis Robinson 2015 vintage) Gavi ‘Spinola’ DOCG, Castello di Tassarolo; Dry, elegant white from Piedmont in north-west Italy. Sometimes dubbed the Chablis of Italy, Gavi is a classy white with delicate stone and orchard fruit and some minerality. And the added bonus of no added sulphur just might mean a clearer head in the morning. Anglo Italian, Henry Finzi-Constantine, moved back from London twenty years ago and has been the driving force behind this innovative, bio-dynamic, horse powered estate. He’s quite a character. Poggiotondo, Organic Vermentino; Made by Tuscan wonder winemaker, Alberto Antonini, this wine has a lovely aromatic nose showing delicate fruit and floral aromas. On the palate, gentle and refreshing acidity, with a rich, 'leesy' texture and a savoury finish. A Mano, Bianco; Positively explosive blend of two of Southern Italy's best indigenous white grapes Fiano Minutolo (90%) and Greco (10%). Partially drying some of the grapes gives intensity to the floral and exotic fruit flavours of white peach and apricots. Crisp acidity, real concentration and a long refreshing finish. All organic except the A Mano - £63 (£73.82 at individual bottle prices)
