GOLD MEDAL WINNER Fantastic, Northern Italian alternative to quality Champagne. Full and creamy in the mouth with a classic biscuity flavours, green apple and lime fruits and a lovely toasty finish. More medals and plaudits than Usain Bolt. The tiny appellation of Franciacorta, on the banks of Lake Iseo in Lombardy must be one of Italy's best kept secrets. Accounts vary but the tradition of making 'traditional method' sparkling wine from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with some Pinot Bianco is, probably, fairly young. But that doesn't mean they don't do it well and a warmer climate means riper grapes and fuller bodied wines. So if you find Champagne a little thin and acidic, Franciacorta could be for you. It's also considerably cheaper than the equivalent quality Champagne.
