Christmas wine cases – our top picks

We’ve put together six mixed, themed wine cases to help you choose your drinks for the festive season.

Each case receives a 10% discount off the full price and they are available to order from all our shops and the wine bar. Ordering details at the bottom of the page.

We’re also offering free delivery for two cases or more in the TQ9 postcode area, in the week beginning December 11th – please order by Friday 8th.

Here are our five themes:

Christmas Day (£74.12 with 10% discount)

The full monty for before, during and after a full on, traditional Christmas dinner.

Perlugo Spumante (£15.95) 100% Verdicchio, traditional method and zero dosage (sugar) and it works. Great value alternative to Champagne.
Flor de Vetus Verdejo (£11.10) Citrus and tropical fruit palate just goes on and on. Perfect with smoked salmon and canapes.
Domaine Begude Chardonnay Etoile (£13.95) Begude’s top end Chardonnay.
Domaine Begude Pinot Noir Esprit (£14.95) Great value Pinot (compared with Burgundy), especially good with turkey and goose.
A Mano Imprint Appasito Primitivo (£14.95) Made in the Amarone style from dried grapes – giving massive concentration but still racy and floral.
Piedra Luenga PX (£11.45) Award-winning pudding wine full of caramel and vine fruit flavours. Made for Christmas pudding.
Both the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are also available in magnums (£29.95).

Unusual reds (£71.13 with 10% discount)

Dominico Basconcillos Ribera del Duero (£13.50) Near perfect blend of fruit and old, slightly toasty, spicy oak. Simply delicious – my wine of the year (so far).
Heinrich Red (£13.99) See above
Cuatro Pasos Mencia (£10.99) Galician whites might be on trend but red Mencia is equally good.
Casa de Mouraz Tinto (£14.50) Typical Dao ‘field blend’ of many unheard of grape varieties. Lovely aromas of pine needles and garrigue herbs.
A Mano Imprint (£14.95) An old favourite but non the worse for that. Made from semi dried Primitivo grapes for extra concertation and opulence.
Santa Tresa – Cerasuolo di Vittoria (£11.10) See above.

Cheap and cheerful/frivolous fun (£46.32 with 10% discount)

Jara frizzante (£10.75) Old favourite gets better and better. None of the cloying sweetness of most spumante (wire top) Prosecco.
Jara frizzante Rosato (£10.75) As above but a dash of red Raboso makes it more food friendly.
Jean de Vigne White (£6.99) Our house white; fresh and flavoursome, crisp and appetising.
Fedele Catarratto / Pinot Grigio (£7.99) Successful Sicilian blend with intense citrus and tropical fruits.
Jean de Vigne Rouge (£6.99) Our house red. Tannat/Merlot blend that rarely fails to please.
Fedele Nero d’Avola (£7.99) Packed with juicy, red berry fruit flavours; an ideal choice to serve with pizza.

Food friendly whites (£62.33 with 10% discount)

There’s more to white than Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio. These all have the body and volume to pair with seafood, vegetable and light poultry dishes.

Pievalta Verdicchio (£11.99) Old favourite from the Marches in Italy.
Domaine Begude Terroir Chardonnay (£10.99) Positively Chablis-esque. 100% Chablis with a small proportion aged in new oak. It works.
Casa Ferreirinha Vinho Grande Branco (£12.99) Discretely oaked Portuguese white.
Delaunay SB (£10.99) This has the smokiness of Pouilly-Fumé and the fruit purity of Sancerre.
Meinklang Gruner Veltliner (£10.50) Austria’s best kept secret – spritzy minerality with a twist of white pepper.
Croix Gratiot Roussanne (£11.80) Noble Rhone white grape with a modern twist.

Rustic reds (price)

Cien y Pico (£11.95) Very old vine Garnacha from La Mancha in Spain.
Dominio Basconcillos, Ribera del Duero (£13.50) – see above
Jara Rock Rose (£9.99) Simple, gutsy 100% Garnacha from the Gredos mountains, west of Madrid. Shows how good a simple wine can be – how do so many go wrong?
A Mano Primitivo £10.99) On the palate, it is youthful and full-bodied, with a great concentration of ripe, rounded fruit characters including blackberry and blueberry.
Maris Minervois (£9.99) Big gutsy Syrah/Grenache blend from biodynamic wizard Robert Eden.
Dandelion Shiraz (£12.99) Big, brassy Aussie Shiraz with bags of rich, baked fruit, chocolate and black olive. A real mouthful.
Ciconia Touriga Nacional (£10.99) Lovely berry, truffle and dark chocolate flavours mellowed by a few months in old oak.
